Helpful Tips for Traveling with Nanny
It may be a vacation for you, but…..
It is work for your nanny, so, think about that when you negotiate travel terms ahead of each trip. I am sure we can all attest to – no two journeys are ever the same! Even a glamorous trip for you is a work challenge for a nanny. Day to day routines are disrupted and while your children are out of their usual element and in new surroundings, your nanny is charged with keeping them healthy and happy.
Whether you are traveling on vacation, or mixing vacation and business― a little advance knowledge can help avoid the most common mistakes.
Plan ahead and talk it through:
It’s easy to be overwhelmed with travel preparations, but don’t shortchange the advance planning with your nanny. Especially likely to be forgotten in the rush is deciding who is responsible for the children on the plane, in the car, etc. While you don’t need to plan every minute of every day, discuss the trip details and expectations at this time. If advance vaccinations or prescriptions are required for the trip, help ensure she gets them and make sure to bring her medical insurance, identification and emergency contact information with you. And remember, your nanny is your timesaving ally to help plan, prepare and even pack for the trip!
Compensation:
You can negotiate a daily or hourly rate, and a nanny can be asked to look after children overnight, but federal law dictates compensation and overtime for all hours spent traveling and working. Flights, meals and travel-related expenses are the employer’s responsibility and are not taxable income for the nanny. Families are not required to pay wages to a nanny for time on her own, including time spent eating and sleeping.
Room/board:
Not dictated by law but expected, a nanny should have his or her own room. If she is caring for additional children at any point during the trip, she should be compensated accordingly. Tell her the weather forecast and type of clothes or accessories she will want to bring. Also, ask how much time off your soon-to-be travel partner would like and decide what works for you. A couple of nights free in Paris could be a delightful bonus!
